Healthy Halloween Treats

Halloween is a festive time for treats which can be healthy! We put together some healthy Halloween treats for your fall festivities including witches brooms, banana ghosts, tangerine pumpkins and spider grapes.

Monster Face Cupcakes

These delicious monsters have 30% less fat and calories and are fun to decorate!

Preparation Time: 25 minutes

Cupcake Ingredients:

  1. 4 ounces softened butter
  2. 2 ounces cream cheese
  3. 1 1/4 cups sugar
  4. 2 eggs
  5. 1/4 cup orange juice
  6. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  7. 2 tablespoons orange zest
  8. 1 2/3 cups cake flour
  9. 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  10. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  11. 1/3 cup low-fat milk
  12. 1/2 cup low-fat greek yogurt

Frosting Ingredients:

  1. 18 ounces cream cheese
  2. 1 1/3 cup sifted powdered sugar
  3. 1 teaspoon orange zest
  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. Natural candies

Cupcake Instructions:

  1. Line a 24 cupcake pan with paper liners.
  2. Put a rack in the center position of your oven and preheat the oven to 350°F.
  3. In a mixing bowl, mix the cake flour, baking powder and salt together then set aside.
  4. In another mixing bowl, beat the butter, cream cheese, sugar and orange zest together for 4 minutes on medium speed. Add in the eggs, orange juice and vanilla. Scrape the sideds of the bowl as needed and mix until completely blended together.
  5. Add in the cake flour mixture from the other bowl and add milk. Beat together until blended together. Add in the yogurt until blended together.
  6. Put the batter evenly into the 24 paper cups in the muffin pan and bake for 15 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center of one comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cupcakes completely before frosting them.

Frosting Instructions:

  1. Sift powdered sugar in a mixing bowl and add cream cheese, orange zest and vanilla. Beat until well combined.
  2. Frost cupcakes and use candies to make monster faces on the cupcakes.
  3. Store at room temperature for up to 12 hours before serving.

Witches Broomsticks

Witches Broomsticks are quick and easy finger foods. They are also super cute!

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. 11 Pretzel sticks
  2. 4 sticks of string cheese
  3. Fresh chives

Instructions:

  1. Cut the string cheese sticks into thirds.
  2. Slice one end 5 times to create broom strands.
  3. Spread out the strands so they look like broom bristles.
  4. Stick a pretzel stick into the uncut end.
  5. Tie a chive around the middle
  6. You're ready to serve!

Banana Ghosts

You can also freeze them for an cold, refreshing treat!

Preparation Time: 2 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. 2 Bananas
  2. 12 Chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Peel bananas.
  2. Cut the bananas in half
  3. Use the chocolate chips to make the eyes for the ghosts.
  4. Stand then upright on a plate and you're ready to serve!

Tangerine Pumpkins

You can also freeze them for an cold, refreshing treat!

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. Clementine oranges
  2. Celery

Instructions:

  1. Peel the clementine oranges.
  2. Cut the celery into tiny pumpkion stems
  3. Press the celery into the top of the clementine oranges.
  4. Arrange them on a platter and you're ready to serve!

Spooky Spider Snacks

Spider snacks are spooky, sweet and tasty!

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  1. 1 plum
  2. 16 pretzel sticks
  3. Edible eyes
  4. Handful of dark grapes

Instructions:

  1. Poke 4 holes on each side of the plum with a knife.
  2. Insert 8 pretzel sticks and push them into the holes.
  3. Poke a hole on the ends of the grapes.
  4. Slide the grapes onto the pretzel sticks leaving a little of the stick showing.
  5. Attach the legs together onto your spider.
  6. Stick on the edible eyes with cream cheese or peanut butter.
  7. Now you're ready to serve your spooky spider!
